We have to pass all sorts of tests in our lives all the time. Some are more important than others. Your future career and salary will depend on how well you do in college. So, you simply have to do great in exams. This is hard for three reasons. You have to do a lot of studying, but you also have to know how to prepare and to tackle the test itself. You will be able certainly get a high grade, as long as you use the correct approach for preparing for an exam.

Plan your time ahead – this is the key to getting ready for an examination. Determine how much time you have to prepare given the other things that you have to do. Then set special study hours for this particular exam only. It is a good idea to prioritize – postpone some of your tasks or cancel unimportant ones, such as partying with your friends, so that you have more time to study.  

Schedule your studying for the exam. This is a bit more difficult, but your efforts will certainly pay off eventually. Start by listing all the topics that you have to go over. Note the books and pages that you have to read. Consider practicing for the exam. Make a list of the exercises that you have to do, in order to get prepared. Determine whether you will need to study with friends to improve your preparation. Once you have the complete list, allocate times to each task. Remember to allocate the necessary study hours for each task. In this way you will never go over the time and lag behind in your preparation for the exam.

Determine what you really have to focus on. If you do not understand basic principles and concept, devote more time to this and get as much help as you possibly can. Avoid learning things by heart. This will get you nowhere. If you understand everything and know the material well, there is no point in going over the textbook again. Just scan it briefly to make sure you have memorized the important points and focus on practicing for the exam. In many subjects, such as math, physics and economics, the solving of problems is crucial. So, instead of going over the formulae, the theorems and examples, you have to practice by solving different problems.

Make sure you know what is required from you. All professors are pretty thorough when they explain what they want their students to know. They also give very precise guidelines for exams. You have to pay close attention and write down everything that is important. You have to use all the information to prepare better by focusing on the exact things that you have to do.

You have to get enough rest the night before the exam. Prepare your clothes and your bag for the next morning and go to bed early. Get to the exam room on time. When you are given the paper, try to clear your mind of all the worries you might have. Focus on answering the questions without thinking about your score and whether you may fail. If you find it hard to answer a question, go to the next one in order not to waste time. Write down everything you know, so that you can get extra points.
