We, humans, are social beings. You cannot be isolated completely from the rest of the world. You need to have good relationships with other people in order to be happy and successful in your life. Of course, it is often difficult to communicate with others. Sometimes emotions get in the way. Opinions clash quite often as well. All kinds of misunderstandings may appear between any two people. You should not let these things ruin your relationships, comforting yourself with the though that you can be self-sufficient. Quite the opposite, you should devote time and effort to improving your relationships with other people.

Be polite, but be kind as well. It is essential for you to treat everyone with respect. Every person has their merits and on one is perfect. You have to try to be nice all the time, even if you do not feel like it. In most cases, we actually direct our negative emotions towards the people who are not responsible for them just because we find them to be closer to us or subordinate to us in a way. So, it is best to be kind, understanding and helpful. If you give people a chance, they will certainly give their best to prove that they are worthy for your kindness and respect.

Do not be judgmental. Assessing another person’s qualities, skills, looks and behavior can really ruin a relationship. Criticizing a person for who they are is perhaps the biggest mistake you can possibly make. If you do not like the person and do not appreciate who they are, then it is best not to have a relationship with them. If you feel that you need to help others improve, then it is best not to criticize, but to encourage people to do what they have to. Remember that it is always best to make suggestions rather than giving direct instructions.

Do not let your emotions lead you every time. You might say that more personal relationships are based on the feelings people have for one another. This is definitely true, but it is best to think things through first. This might not make your relationships more emotional, but it will certainly make them stronger. For instance, if you are angry at your parents for giving you directions on how to live your life, you can readily calm down and look from their perspective. After you have thought things through, you can readily have a more mature and serious conversation with them. You will not be angry and they will not be upset.

Last, but not least, cherish the people you have relationships with and care for them. You cannot be in good terms with someone unless you talk to them, understand them and give them your support. You have to give even a little bit of yourself to the other person. In turn, you will get returned what you have given. At the same time, you should share and rely on others too, when you need help and support. This is how relationships are built.
