Top Things to Consider of an Aspiring Filmmaker
In the world of Visual Arts, it’s undeniable that Filmmaking has evolved over time. And just when you thought making movies are just for Spielberg, Cameron, Wyles, and other award-winning directors, budding filmmakers all over the world are making a name in the industry.
What inspired them? What motivates them to do films? How do they do it?
If you are aspiring to become a filmmaker, and dreams to come up with your very own film, here are some points that you need to consider:
- Passion. This is your tool in going about the challenges of filmmaking, thus, passion is what keeps you going despite the adversities and conflicts along the way due to possible unfavorable circumstances that could occur.
- Have the Eye for Film. For a filmmaker, his film is his identity. And his first film can either be a break or a make, so make sure you do have the eye for film. Learn to see good angle. Actually having a background in photography is a great advantage. The Asian Film Director for Instance, Zhang Yimou who is famous for films like “Raise the Red Lantern”, “House of Flying Dagger “ and “Curse of the Golden flower”, started out as Photographer before he engaged into filmmaking, he didn’t even have any formal studies on films.
- The Story. According to an awarded Director and Writer in the Philippines, Ricardo Lee, where he quoted something in his book, “Trip to Quiapo” , that good films are made out of the realities and experience of a person. Although most came from creative imagination, you cannot deny that there will always be part in the film which was made out of the experience of the writer or director. Thus, note that the script is the backbone of the film, it is the important part of making a film because no matter how good your cinematography could be if your story is a flop, then it does not make your film a good one.
- Editing. This is the last stage of making your film, basically, the editing part is crucial as just like Creating a Story, the editor also makes a good story teller through the visuals of the film.. one thing to know here is that, no matter how good you had your film taken if the editing is poor, then it affects the entire film. So Editors needs to be focused and must search on how to make the film better.
Bottomline, anyone is capable of doing films, all you have to do is to make sure you have a good story with you, a video camera, and a reliable editing equipment then you are all set to shoot… but always remember to always have the eye for your shots, and the passion to finish the film regardless of circumstance and nothing can keep you from doing it.
