You have to measure the amount of water in which you will cook the pasta carefully. For every 3.5 ounces of pasta you have to add 34 ounces of water into the cooking pot. You can just note the weight of the amount in the package and divide in two or three parts that look equal.
Once you have poured the water into the cooking pot you have to add some salt as well. This will improve the taste of your pasta tremendously. It is best to add just a few pinches of salt. A larger amount is not necessary. You should also add a tablespoon of olive oil after the salt. You do not have to stir the water afterwards. The oil is necessary so that the pasta pieces do not stick to each other during the boiling.
You can readily choose to place the burner on the highest heat in order to boil the water more quickly. The water is ready once it is brought to the so called rolling boil. The bubbles should be large and they should not stop appearing after you stir the water. You have to make sure that the water is ready before adding the pasta. You have to add it to the cooking pot carefully so that the hot water does not splash. If you are cooking spaghetti you can readily leave the parts of the pasta that are in the water to soften for a few seconds and then press them gently with a wooden spoon. This should take the entire pieces under the water.
You can readily turn the knob of the burner to medium once you have added the pasta. The lid should be closed. You will have to open it to stir the pasta every two to three minutes. It is best to use a wooden spoon. You should follow the cooking time stated on the package, but it is best to taste the pasta before the end of the boiling to make sure it is ready. All you have to do is use the wooden spoon to take out a piece. Then you have to put it under running cold water. You have to taste the piece. It has to be firm and not spongy. At the same time it should be tender.
Make sure you drain the pasta into a colander. Do not rinse it with cold water if you are cooking a hot dish. Just serve it directly.
