The first step would be to take a detailed case history of the client to ascertain or at least attempt to ascertain where the origin of the trauma in the past created the issue at hand. Some good examples of emotional trauma that can cause stuttering include emotional upsets, psychological and conditioning traumas. The next step would be to take the client into a deeply hypnotic relaxed state. Give some direct suggestions and ego strengthening that includes speaking slowly, softly and perfectly. I would then ask the client to open his or her eyes without waking from the hypnotic state. Have the client speak to you and have him or her notice that he is able to speak without a stutter in hypnosis. In this way, confirm and highlight the fact that the client does indeed speak without a stutter and affirm in the mind of the sufferer that he or she does not need to stutter at all and has the ability not to do so. Taking the client back down into a deeper state and affirming the new status will help the overall condition.

In the waking state, ask the client whilst speaking to you to focus on your forehead. In this way the client has shifted his or her focus away from his voice and the way he communicates to staring at the forehead of the therapist. It may be a good idea to use direct suggestions to help the client shift his attention away from his or own voice to the other person’s forehead or eyes to reduce the typical anxiety associated with the prior condition of stuttering. When the cause of his stuttering seems to be through an emotional trauma it can be a good idea to use age regression to resolve the issue at hand. It should also be noted that it can take up to 5 to 6 sessions before an improvement can be seen.
