Substance abuse and addiction is actually an age old problem. Unbeknownst to most individuals, they may be addicted to one particular substance or another. There are addictions to chocolate, rice, chips etc. Most of the abuse and addictions however are harmless other than expanding the waistline. However, for prescription drugs, the problem is more complicated. It’s true that some prescription drugs can cause addiction, and afterwards abuse or vice versa. The problems are numerous, some drugs can kill over time, others can disable addicts for life.

Here are the top abused prescription drugs that you should avoid.

For the type A personality who is constantly on the go, sometimes popping and occasional Xanax or two can help relieve the stress. There are two problems that will occur. First is that the consumer will feel as if he or she can’t get through the day without Xanax. Second, as he or she drinks the pill every day, they develop a tolerance to it so it would mean that they need more of Xanax just to get the same high they got the first time they drank it. If they can’t drink Xanax, they develop withdrawal symptoms such as panic attacks, seizures and ironically, more anxiety.

Another prescription drug is actually Methamphetamine. Yes, the drug known as ice or speed is actually a prescription drug for ADHD and anti obesity. It’s not east getting prescribed meth by a doctor, the doctor has to be convinced that the only way to control your ADHD is through meth. There are occasional slips though, parents of children who need Desoxyn (brand of Meth) usually end up taking the pills thereby forming an addiction. On the upside, prescribed meth is pure unlike the ones bought of the street. Prolonged use can cause emaciation as it suppresses appetite.

While meth or speed is stimulating, some abused prescription drugs are depressants or rather pain numbing agents such as narcotic syrups like codeine and hydrocodone. Also known as “purple drank” the effect is the same as opiates. They give euphoria, tingly feeling while relaxing the drinker. This leads to addiction faster than any other drug. The only problem is drinking too much after developing a tolerance to it. Too much can shut down your respiratory system.

Then there is the drug that is abused in universities by students cramming for exams. Adderall is a form of drug mixture of amphetamine which resembles or the same with meth and ecstasy. When taken with Ritalin, the drug gives focus and motivation and may help pass an exam.

Finally, Opana might be a drug that needs prescription but at the rate at how many get addicted, streets are now selling the drug. The high gotten from Opana is much more than oxycodone and even heroin. Just 1/8 of 40 mg and a person who has low tolerance will get high quickly.
